*Here we go again. Every time a member of the GOP starts lagging in the polls they bring up abortion and/or school prayer. Surefire issues that get the blood flowing and the jaws yapping. A way to distract and deflect and rouse the rabble.
That abortion has been and was ever and still is an issue discussed, debated and decided on by a bunch of old white guys that don’t even have a horse in the race, instead of women and their medical professionals, is ludicrous – just nuts!
As for school prayer, be careful what you start advocating for Mr. Trump – you just may get it.
What does school prayer look like in today’s age of “political correctness” and “everyone’s entitled” and “whiners win”? It sure isn’t going to be a quick “Lord’s Prayer” and let’s call it good. Two of the Salats, the ritual Islamic prayers, occur during the school day and instruction will need to cease school-wide for those prayers. The Jewish faith also includes daily prayer, for which classes must cease and Hebrew learned. Allowances must be also made for practitioners of Buddhism and Hinduism and other sects. Well, we prayed! No time for class! School’s out!
If there’s going to be a prayer in school let it be one for the teachers who do the most important work under difficult circumstances for not enough pay. Or for the teachers and the students that may be gunned down and slaughtered on any sunny day because lawmakers refuse to abide by the Second Amendment and impose regulations or find the funds to install security systems and trained personnel in our schools!

That many of the Founding Fathers believed strongly in the idea of separation of Church and State is well documented. A problem in 2020 is that some of our leaders quote documents and people that they have clearly never read, re-writing history (and sometimes the Constitution) as they go merrily along in a fashion eerily similar to 1984’s Ministry of Truth. If you take twenty or thirty minutes out of your entire life to actually read the entire Constitution and the Bill of Rights and Jefferson’s letter to the Danbury Baptists in 1802 in which he says:
“I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should “make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,” thus building a wall of separation between Church & State”,
a clear sense of their intentions comes into focus.
Madison, upon the passing of the 1786 Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom, wrote that its passing “extinguished forever the ambitious hope of making laws for the human mind.” He believed that to give government any authority over religion violated the fundamental principle of the American Revolution:
“It is proper to take alarm at the first experiment on our liberties. We hold this prudent jealousy to be the first duty of Citizens, and one of the noblest characteristics of the late Revolution.”
Ben Franklin wrote that:
“The [1787 Constitutional] Convention, except for three or four persons, thought prayers unnecessary.”
President John Adams declared:
“Nothing is more dreaded than the national government meddling with religion.”

Don’t we want thinkers as leaders? Don’t we want educated men and women who are well-versed in rational thought, research & study and logical decisions? Let’s hope so. Where does religion fit into any of that? There’s nothing rational or logical or even sensical about it.
There has never been a more corrupt organization – then or now – than the Catholic Church, and Protestants that snootily fancy themselves removed from all that are using the same bastardized, incomplete, edited & manipulated, self-contradictory Bible that everyone else uses in their ‘distinctive’ services that are all but identical to the Mass. Every Sunday the Big Lie is proclaimed over and over as the book is raised and is claimed to be ‘The Word of God’ which it most clearly is not.
In a moment of sanity between just you and you, would you rather have indoctrinated, ignorant leaders that operate on blind faith, emotion and fairy tales or leaders that deal in logic, facts and rational thought? Because the idea that we are just one decrepit old man heart attack away from a president that thinks Jesus talks to him is utterly terrifying to this sceptic blogger.
Religion is fine but we don’t need prayer in schools. We don’t need politicians that can’t do any better than to keep pulling it out of their back pockets. We don’t need religion in government and we don’t need it in election campaigns. What we do need are leaders – first and foremost a president – that have read and studied our founding documents and our Founding Fathers and our history. We need leaders that have a grasp on what America meant to those that toiled and died to bring it into existence and then do a better job of honoring those ideals, those founders, those documents and what they still stand for.
