Giant Sequoias

Giant Sequoias Homage

O cinnamon mighty fire-resistant trunked-ones,
Your tree kingdom royal highnesses,
Gargantuan beings beyond perception of immense!
Rare Cali’ Sierran glorious mountaineers,
Deep rich soils, disease and pest free.
Heavenly.

Perfect ancient carbon storehouses. Old before Christ.
Many surface fires, tannic bark acids strong-armed.
Time stood still until greedy Euros arrived.
Haphazard felling, shattering, destruction reined,
Then John Muir proclaimed sequoia’s divinity. Salvation!

Along came grimy oilmen, palm oilers, wood pellet scourge.
Mercury spiked, snowless Sierra, climate crown hellfires raged.
Giant sequoias by the thousands shrieked and burned alive.
To lose but one, a gut-wrenching funeral.
To lose thousands, a cry of survival. Nothing earthly exempt.

Love and fear propelled planet defenders.
Pliable world leaders, diabolical resource oligarchs and bankers,
“Name your price.” Planet-killers replied, “More!”
Mother Earth loving Gen Zs out numbered them, a billion to one,
Sacred sequoias defended. Evil planet-killers banished to their flashy rockets.
